YEAR IN REVIEW
2025
Dear Friends and Community Members,
This year, we have been guided by a simple and powerful idea:
The Ripple Effect
Across Colorado, we see again and again how intentional investments in people, leadership, and community travel farther than any one moment, shaping lives, institutions, and places over time. At Boettcher, our work begins with trust in individuals and communities. It is then sustained by the belief that when leadership is nurtured with care, its impact expands.
That belief came to life in many ways throughout 2025. At our Ripple Effect event early in the year, we gathered nearly 200 Boettcher Scholars, Fellows, Alums, Trustees, and staff, spanning more than six decades of shared history. The stories exchanged, the conversations held, and the connections formed reminded us that leadership is not a solitary act. It grows through relationships, through listening, and through the courage to ask for help and offer it in return. During this convening, we highlighted the 151 for 51 campaign, which rallied our community around supporting a 51st Boettcher Scholar. The energy it sparked is a powerful reminder that when generosity is shared, it creates opportunity that lasts.
We also deepened our commitment to understanding and strengthening leadership across Colorado through the State of Leadership initiative. By listening to more than 1,000 leaders representing all 64 counties, we heard a consistent call for connection, shared resources, and leadership rooted in communities themselves.
These conversations affirmed that Colorado’s strength lies in more than mere titles. Authentic leadership is found in the people quietly building bridges, solving problems, and caring for their neighbors every day.
As we look ahead, we remain focused on sustaining and expanding these ripples. The challenges facing Colorado are complex and evolving, but so is the leadership rising to meet them.
By continuing to listen, to invest thoughtfully, and to stand in partnership with communities across the state, we are confident that today’s actions will shape a stronger, more connected Colorado for generations to come.
With gratitude,

From One Act to Lasting Impact
Ripple Effect 2025 convened nearly 200 Boettcher Alums (cohorts spanning from 1963 to 2024), current Scholars, Fellows, Trustees, and staff from February 28–March 1 at CSU Spur’s Hydro Building in Denver.
The program included opportunities to learn together and build community among our Alums. We ended the year at CSU Spur hosting more than 70 leadership practitioners for a day of professional development and deepening relationships.

Connecting leaders with 10+ Colorado nonprofits seeking board members and Alum-led projects.
Led by Alums sharing authentic stories on personal growth, professional paths, and Colorado topics. Speakers included filmmaker Natalie Van Doren on embracing failure as a catalyst for growth, Stanford scientist-dancer Ashley Williams on balancing two very different callings with movement, and entrepreneur JulieMarie Shepherd Macklin on asking for help, illustrated through cookie decorating.
We hosted multi-generational discussions on aligning ambition with impact, wellness and mental health, bridging divides, and civic engagement.

Making Waves in Statewide Leadership
Ripple Effect 2025 opened our year of convenings at CSU Spur’s Hydro Building—closing the circle with Ripple Effect for Leadership Practitioners in November. Both events at the same iconic Denver venue amplified our theme of small actions creating statewide leadership waves.

Launched at Ripple Effect in February, the State of Leadership is a multi-year initiative designed to assess and strengthen Colorado’s leadership ecosystem. The initial phase in 2025 involved listening sessions and exploring themes of relationships, resources, and leadership qualities.
Colorado faces complex economic, social, and generational challenges requiring connected, adaptive leadership. This effort helps us to see leadership gaps, including training for rural board nonprofit board members and youth engagement while sparking collaborations to build capacity statewide.
Relationships
We are exploring the quality of relationships, understanding which organizations and people are working together well, and finding out which communities do not yet have established trust.
Resources
We are working to understand how access to resources differs as we hear first-hand how communities, local governments, funders, and other organizations address the challenges.
Qualities of Leadership
We are exploring the different contexts of leadership across Colorado. As we listen to those with titles (more formal) to those more quietly driving change (informal), we are finding smarter ways to share resources and make communities stronger.
Connections and themes have started to emerge.
Here are some of our initial insights:
Alumni Board
From Steamboat Springs to Kit Carson, Portland to Boston, our Alumni Board members span the entire state of Colorado and even represent our Alums outside of the state. Graduating between 1978 and 2022, they’ve graduated from different Colorado universities and their expertise spans multiple industries from education to law and more.

Our Alums connected outside of Colorado, as we held Alumni receptions in New York City and Los Angeles. We also made sure to connect with Alums in the state, as we hosted receptions in both Pueblo and Palisade.
Whether it was through mentoring, attending Scholars Experience, or even writing 100 welcome notes to our newest Boettcher Scholars, our Alumni continued to give back to our community by by elevating our Boettcher Scholars.
Alums from across the state joined forces at our Service Summit, learning from a panel of experts in the food insecurity space. It was an inspiring reminder that our shared impact is greater when we work side by side.
This year, we launched our quarterly Catalyst Conversations Series, where our Alums virtually shared their expertise with others across the country. We learned about topics such as integrating AI, international development, and food insecurity.

Elevate and Impact Awards
This year, the Boettcher Alumni Board proudly honored two remarkable Alums through the Elevate and Impact Awards, recognitions that celebrate leadership, service, and transformational impact.
Lupita Garcia
2022 Boettcher Fellow
San Luis Valley
Lupita received the Elevate Award, which recognizes a recent Boettcher Alum who is early in their journey yet already making meaningful change. Through her work with the Energy Resource Center and numerous community initiatives spanning equity, broadband access, and women’s empowerment, Lupita exemplifies a leader who uplifts others while continually striving for growth.
Dr. Ashesh Thaker
2000 Boettcher Scholar
Dr. Ashesh Thaker was honored with the Impact Award, presented to an Alum whose sustained leadership has made significant contributions in their field and community. As Interim Chair of Radiology and Chief of Neuroradiology at Denver Health, Dr. Thaker has advanced innovative programs in neuroimaging and education while championing health equity in resource-constrained settings.
This year, our Alums demonstrated their sincere desire to give back to Boettcher by donating to the Boettcher Scholars Fund, a 501(c)(3)-public charity that provides philanthropic resources in support of the Boettcher Foundation’s charitable programs and initiatives.
This year, we announced our intention to further realize the potential of Coloradans by creating a 51st Boettcher Scholarship. Our Alums donated and helped us unlock matching donations from our retiring Trustees through our “51 for 51” campaign and our year-end giving campaign. These efforts brought us closer to creating more opportunities for Colorado’s future leaders.
My family is proud to be part of the Legacy Circle to support the Boettcher Foundation and our shared belief in the promise of Colorado and the potential of Coloradans.
